Kate E. Brubacher, United States Attorney for the District of Kansas, has announced her resignation, effective January 19, 2025, in a letter submitted to President Joe Biden. Appointed as the 42nd U.S. Attorney for the District of Kansas, Brubacher was sworn in on March 10, 2023, becoming the first woman to hold the position. She was nominated by President Biden and confirmed by the U.S. Senate.
The District of Kansas, covering all 105 counties and serving a population of approximately 2.9 million, operates offices in Kansas City, Topeka, and Wichita. Its mission includes protecting citizens from terrorism, enforcing federal laws, and advancing U.S. government interests.
During Brubacher’s tenure, the district achieved significant milestones, including dismantling international drug trafficking operations, prosecuting child pornography offenders, and addressing white-collar crimes.
“I leave this position with overwhelming respect for the career attorneys, professional staff, and the
dedicated law enforcement officers who work diligently and in good faith every day to protect the
public and uphold our Constitution,” Brubacher said. “Together, we focused on confronting the
fentanyl epidemic and keeping Kansans safe from violent crime, including crimes against children,
and we paid just amounts when there were just claims against the United States. The people and
partnerships in Kansas are unsurpassed, and I look forward to seeing the continued success of the
U.S. Attorney’s Office in the years ahead.”
