U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Celebrates National Wildlife Refuge Week, Promoting Outdoor Access and Conservation Efforts

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced it is celebrating National Wildlife Refuge Week from October 13-19, 2024. This annual event encourages outdoor enjoyment while highlighting the National Wildlife Refuge System, established in 1903 to protect vital wildlife habitats and provide accessible nature experiences for millions of Americans.

Under the Biden-Harris administration, the Service has conserved over 570,000 acres and approved plans to acquire more than 1.6 million acres in fee-title and easements, emphasizing collaborative conservation efforts. This initiative aligns with the America the Beautiful program, which aims to conserve and restore 30% of the nation’s lands and waters by 2030.

Celebrations kicked off on October 12 with Urban Wildlife Conservation Day. The Service is set to host over 35 free walking events across the country. The Urban Wildlife Conservation Program also connects city residents to nature, promoting access to green spaces and environmental education.
