The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Kansas City District will temporarily close or reduce services at recreation areas across Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, and Iowa starting May 15, 2025, due to staffing and resource limitations. These adjustments, affecting all 18 district lakes, are necessary to ensure visitor safety, protect environmental resources, and support hydropower and dam operations.
Notable impacts include campground closures at:
- North and South Outlet Park, Harlan County Lake, NE: 25 primitive campsites will be closed, but river access and day use will remain open.
- Minooka Park, Wilson Lake, KS: The Marshall Cove Loop will be closed for overnight use, but day use will remain available.
In addition, information centers will be closed at:
- Hillsdale Lake, KS: No public services, including pass sales.
- Kanopolis Lake, KS: Pass sales available by appointment only.
Visitors are urged to check the status of recreation sites before visiting and to explore alternative locations when necessary. It’s important to follow posted signage and closures to protect safety and help facilities reopen smoothly.
USACE encourages responsible recreation by checking weather, bringing essentials, respecting wildlife, and wearing life jackets near water. Full services will resume when conditions improve.
