The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) has released its 2024 Kansas Crime Index Report, revealing a drop in both violent and property crime rates across the state compared to the previous year.
According to the report, violent crime in Kansas fell by 6.7% from 2023, with 12,643 incidents of murder, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault and battery reported. This brings the violent crime rate in line with the state’s 10-year average.
Property crimes also saw a significant decline, dropping 12.9% in 2024. Of the 58,161 total property crime offenses reported, theft made up the majority with 43,636 cases, accounting for 75% of property crimes. The remaining 25%—14,525 cases—were burglaries and motor vehicle thefts. The KBI noted that property crimes are frequently underreported.
The data, collected through the Kansas Incident Based Reporting System (KIBRS), is intended to offer a historical overview of crime trends in the state. The KBI advises against comparing crime data between jurisdictions, as local conditions and factors can differ widely.
