The Wamego Community Foundation (WCF) announced the introduction of its new “Young Philanthropists” initiative, which empowers Wamego High School Peer Chamber students to actively support local nonprofits during this year’s Wamego Match Day. Sponsored by the Bank of the Flint Hills and the Edna Mae Peddicord Charitable Trust, the program aims to educate students about philanthropy, community service, and the importance of giving back.
On Match Day, the Young Philanthropists met for their October Peer Chamber meeting during which Aimee Nelson, WCF Director, highlighted the significance of Match Day, its community impact, and the essential role of local nonprofits. Each student received a $200 giving voucher and a donation form, encouraging them to research and contribute to organizations of their choice.
Students were encouraged to engage with nonprofit representatives to learn about their services, volunteer opportunities, and the specific use of their donations. This hands-on experience in philanthropy aimed to help students understand the direct impact of their contributions on the community. In addition, they were informed that every dollar donated would remain within Wamego, emphasizing local philanthropy’s significance.
As part of the initiative, students will receive thank-you cards from the nonprofits they support and will have the opportunity to witness the positive effects of their donations in the community.
