Washburn University to Launch Manufacturing Institute in Former Kmart Building in North Topeka

Washburn University is expanding educational opportunities in the manufacturing sector with the launch of the Manufacturing Institute at Washburn Institute of Technology (Washburn Tech) in North Topeka.

Dr. JuliAnn Mazachek, president of Washburn, announced that the institute will be housed in the former Kmart building, a 90,000-square-foot facility, offering ample space for training and large parking areas. The project, which responds to the state’s growing manufacturing industry, is funded through a combination of state and private funding.

After evaluating several options, Washburn leaders determined a former Kmart building was the best choice due to its size, location, and cost savings. Construction is expected to begin in early 2025, while existing Washburn Tech facilities will continue to serve students.
