Wichita State University Launches Kansas’ First Licensed Mental Health Technician Pathway to Address Growing Care Needs

Wichita State University’s School of Nursing has introduced a new Licensed Mental Health Technician (LMHT) pathway, marking the first program of its kind in Kansas. This initiative aims to meet the increasing demand for mental health care professionals in the state.

Key features of the LMHT pathway include:

  • Online Coursework: The curriculum is entirely online, making it accessible to individuals throughout the region.
  • Transferable Credits: All credit hours earned can be applied to a healthcare degree program for those pursuing further education.
  • Rural Clinical Partnerships: The School of Nursing is developing clinical partnerships in rural areas, enabling students to complete their clinical requirements closer to home.

The demand for mental health care has surged, highlighting a significant shortage of trained professionals. Licensed Mental Health Technicians will be equipped to care for patients facing mental or behavioral health challenges, addressing a crucial healthcare need in Kansas.

Debra Pile, chair and associate dean for nursing practice at the WSU College of Health Professions, emphasized the program’s importance for the future of mental health care in Kansas. Claudio Ferraro, president of Ascension Via Christi St. Joseph Hospital, noted that the new pathway will allow them to hire more trained mental health technicians, thereby improving patient care.

Classes will begin in spring 2025, and enrollment is now open.
