Wichita’s new animal ordinance will mandate microchipping for all dogs and cats aged five months or older and introduce increased fines for dog bites. The fine for a first-time dog bite will rise from $250 to $500, with subsequent offenses ranging from $1,000 to $2,500. Licensing fees remain $15 for spayed or neutered pets, but rise to $50 for those that aren’t.

Households will be allowed up to three dogs and/or cats without a permit. The ordinance, effective January 1, aims to help identify lost pets and verify rabies vaccinations through microchipping.

Focusing on reducing the number of stray pets in Wichita, the humane society advocates for microchipping, which significantly simplifies the process of reuniting lost pets with their owners.
