Wyandotte County Rallies for Healthier Future: Community Efforts Lead Revitalization Projects and Health Initiatives

Residents and extension staff in Wyandotte County are working towards a healthier future in an area of Kansas that often ranks low in state health standings.

Denise Dias, director of K-State Research and Extension in Wyandotte County, noted that focus group meetings earlier this year identified new ways to improve life in the county. The community discussed health and funding concerns, leading residents to spearhead projects like cleaning up run-down areas, building walking trails, and establishing community gardens.

Dias highlighted that some city areas, especially older parts, need revitalization. The momentum in Wyandotte County aims to support the Healthy Kansans 2030 initiative, led by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. Extension agents are actively involved, encouraging community partnerships to enhance health.

Early focus group discussions led to grant writing workshops which taught residents to secure funds for neighborhood improvements, leading to significant community progress and further collaborations addressing various health issues. According to Dias, so far 65 residents have been trained to write grants.
