Belleville is considering the possibility of hosting a cryptocurrency mining operation, though it remains cautious. Lance Zoltenko of Zoltenko Farms proposed Belleville as a site for Wildcat Blockchain’s mining facility and suggested using vacant land near the Belleville Power Plant.
Zoltenko noted that a similar facility in Superior, Nebraska, has brought revenue without excessive noise, likening the noise level to that of a central air conditioner. Despite the potential benefits, Belleville city officials, including City Manager Adam Anderson, are wary. The council plans to visit the Nebraska facility to better understand the operation, particularly regarding noise concerns due to the proximity to a local park. Anderson suggested an industrial park as a more suitable location and noted financial challenges in negotiating favorable power rates for the facility.
Additionally, Belleville is exploring options for purchasing power on the open market to support the project. Although city officials see financial potential, they are approaching the decision carefully, especially without a city attorney to assist with the legal aspects.
