Topics discussed during the USD 379 Board’s regular monthly meeting on May 12th included: Handbooks, bus purchase, personnel, and more.

Brett Nelson, Superintendent, provided the Board a copy of the May 2025 Superintendent report.  The report covered various topics, including negotiation and budget timeliness through the summer.

Anita Breen, TLEC Director, presented the TLEC report to the Board. TLEC is working to determine what the needs will be for the next school year. The report stated that TLEC met the requirements through the IDEA State Performance Plan for level of determination for the year 2023.

Jaclyn Pfizenmaier, Director of Curriculum & Instruction, reported that the final KSEA Action Plan for 2025-2026 had been submitted to KSDE.  The report details Kansas Standards alignment and how the District is working to align with the state standards, along with how the staff is working on the new LETRS training required by KSDE. Pfizenmaier also presented a necessary school calendar revision for the next school year. The revision is to move a Professional Development day from September 22nd to the 23rd due to the 22nd being observed as Count Day for the District. This change is due to the original Count Day of September 20th being a Saturday.

A motion was made to approve all Student Handbooks for the 2025-2026 school year. The only exception to the original drafts was to remove “closed-toe” from the footwear dress code section. Motion carried. The Board then reviewed the Classified and Staff Handbooks for the district and each school. No action was taken on the Handbooks.

A motion was made to give final approval to purchase a 65-passenger activity bus with additional overhead storage for the district. Motion carried. A motion was also made to extend the current food service contract with Chartwells for the next school year; the motion carried.

The Board approved personnel employments, resignations, and retirements, including summer instructional help for 2025. Motion carried. They then finished the meeting with motions to approve classified staff renewals for the 2025-2026 school year as presented, and supplemental recommendations and renewals for the 2025-2026 school year. Motion carried for both items.
