Belleville resident James Doyle ended speculation recently by filing for the city’s mayoral seat. Formerly the city council president, Doyle officially became mayor following Mayor Adam Robertson’s resignation.
Robertson stepped down to accept an administrative role in Lincoln County, a move anticipated while awaiting formal documentation. Doyle had been considering his options: temporarily serving as mayor, declining the position to remain on the council, or accepting and re-filing for the mayoral race, which is up for election this year.
Ultimately, he chose to take the role, citing a belief that state law required it. His council seat is now vacant and will be filled by appointment, likely during a June meeting. That council term is not due to expire until the next election cycle.
