Junction City Commission Approve Childcare Reforms to Help Reduce Barriers

The Junction City Commission unanimously approved reforms to local childcare ordinances to align with recent state updates and reduce barriers for in-home childcare providers. Key changes include eliminating restrictions on operational hours, enabling providers to offer care during nontraditional times, such as for shift workers. Additionally, local permit requirements and associated fees were removed, cutting costs and simplifying the process by centralizing licensing and compliance under state jurisdiction.

The updated ordinances also classify illegal child care as a municipal offense, with penalties including fines and possible jail time. Unlicensed care is defined as looking after more than two unrelated children for over 20 hours weekly without a state license. These measures aim to bolster enforcement and ensure child safety.

Residents interested in licensing or with questions can contact the Geary County Child Care Coalition for resources. These reforms will enhance flexibility for families and support safer, regulated child care in Junction City.
