For 60 years, the Zimmerman family owned and managed Washington’s K Motel, marking the end of an era with its recent sale to Michael Abberger of China Grove, North Carolina, and his company, Midwest Enterprise.
Abberger officially took ownership on October 28th and plans to remodel the property in January, transforming it into five long-term and two short-term rental apartments, plus a renovated four-bedroom, three-bathroom house.
The short-term rentals will be available on Airbnb and are aimed at visiting workers and hunters. Abberger said the apartments should open in February and will be managed locally. Despite the changes, the historic K Motel sign will remain as a landmark.
Built in the 1930s by Alvin and Margie Knedlik, the K Motel had been run by the Zimmerman family since 1965. Former owners Deb Swoboda and Connie Imhoff said selling the family property was bittersweet after decades of connection and care.
