Clay Center Community High School FFA Instructor Andrea Flegler and six FFA members presented to Clay Center Lions Club members during their regular meeting on December 2nd. FFA members conducted an Opening Ceremony and Parliamentary Procedure demonstration for the Club.

The FFA Parlaw Team follows a book titled ‘Robert’s Rules of Order’ when conducting their meetings. Flegler said it’s important that all voices are heard.

“Basically, it’s how to run a meeting effectively with parliamentary law, making sure that we are protecting the rights of the minorities in the group.”

“Everybody has an opportunity to make their voices heard.”

During the demonstration, FFA members held a meeting on a special event at Piotique, including camel rides for kids. The members, led by the president, spoke for or against this event, demonstrating their ability to conduct an orderly meeting where all voices are heard.

The members and teams compete with other FFA Chapters, hoping to make it to State and even Nationals. Flegler said it’s a great way for members to get comfortable and confident in public speaking.

“It is really amazing to see the growth and development of our members as they practice public speaking skills and leadership skills.”

“Having the ability to come in like this and present to people that they know from their community.”

“They normally only have about two to three judges in the room. Sometimes they know them, and sometimes they don’t.”

Parliamentary Procedure is used by many organizations, making these contests important for these students, not just while in FFA but in adulthood.
