At approximately 11:00 a.m. today, the Clay Center Fire Department (CCFD) received a call for a kitchen fire at 1008 Sherman Street in Clay Center. Dispatch said the occupant told them an air fryer was on fire.

When firefighters arrived, the house was full of smoke. Firefighters packed up and took a 1 ¾ attack line and started spraying water to extinguish the fire. As they were extinguishing the fire, they started positive ventilation while looking for the source of the fire.

Firefighters found the fire was in the ceiling. Pike poles were used to take out part of the ceiling and remove any hot spots. CCFD found an air fryer on the electric stove and removed it from the house.

The occupant stated that she had just used the air fryer and unplugged it, and moved it to the stove for it to cool off before she went to her room. The family dog started barking, so she got up and came out of her room to find flames shooting out of the air fryer.

The occupant then called 911 and reported the incident and tried to get her animals outside. She stated she feels like when she moved the air fryer to the electric stove, she might have accidentally bumped the stove on.
