Travis Smith, head coach of the Clay Center High School boys’ basketball team, is entering his sixth year at the helm with high expectations for his squad. With a senior-heavy roster and several returning varsity players, the team is poised for a competitive season.
“Expectations every year are to contend for a league title,” Smith said.
“We want to be the best team in our league and also be the best team in our division in 4A.”
Smith noted the importance of daily preparation in practice.
“It’s just how we come to practice every day and how we approach the day, creating good habits that are going to get us to where we want to go.”
Veteran Leadership and Returning Starters
For the first time in Smith’s tenure, the team boasts a large senior class.
“I’ll have eight seniors out that will all contribute at the varsity level,” Smith said.
He highlighted four returning starters: Weston Hammond, Cole Pladen, Owen Craig, and Jace Weller.
“Those four guys started a year ago, but then I’ve got three other seniors that are definitely going to be able to contribute as well.”
This veteran presence brings valuable experience to the team.
“There’ll be a lot of veteran experience on the floor this year,” Smith added.
Strengths and Areas for Growth
Smith sees the team’s experience as a key strength.
“Most of the guys we’ll be playing at the varsity level will have some good varsity experience, and I would say that’s definitely one of our strengths,” he said.
The guard position remains particularly strong, but Smith is excited about the contributions of the team’s post players.
“We’re strong in the guard spot, but this year we’re going to have some post players who are going to be contributing more than they have in the past.”
Fostering Leadership and Team Chemistry
With a senior-heavy team, Smith is focused on developing strong leaders.
“Even as seniors, we have to continue to develop what it looks like to be a positive and encouraging leader in every aspect of the game,” he explained.
Smith emphasized the importance of maintaining composure throughout the season.
“There’s a lot of valleys and a lot of hilltops, and just being able to manage those emotions as mature leaders will be an ongoing focus.”
A Special Connection
Smith has a unique connection with this senior class, having worked with them since they were in elementary school.
“This is a group that I was actually able to teach in PE when they were in fifth grade,” Smith said.
“I’ve had these kids a long time, and I’m just grateful for the opportunity to coach them because they’re a good group.”
With a wealth of experience and a strong foundation of leadership, Clay Center boys’ basketball is set for an exciting season.
“I’m really excited to start the year,” Smith concluded.
