Clay County Medical Center Celebrates Occupational Therapy Month

CCMC

In honor of Occupational Therapy Month this April, Clay County Medical Center (CCMC) is proud to recognize the vital role occupational therapists play in helping individuals live healthier, more independent lives. While both Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy are essential components of patient care, each one focuses on different aspects of recovery and wellness.

Occupational Therapy (OT) is designed to help individuals regain the ability to perform everyday
activities—whether it’s getting dressed, cooking a meal, returning to work, or enjoying a favorite
pastime. At Clay County Medical Center, occupational therapists work one-on-one with patients to
improve their fine motor skills, adapt to physical limitations, and overcome challenges that impact
daily living.

“OT is not just about rehabilitation,” said Shawna Pederson, Occupational Therapist at CCMC. “It’s
about helping people get back to doing the things that give their life meaning. We’re here to support
independence at every stage of life.”

Physical Therapy (PT), by contrast, focuses on improving movement and mobility. Through guided
exercises and treatment plans, physical therapists help patients manage pain, recover strength, and
regain balance—often after surgery, injury, or due to chronic conditions.

“Physical Therapy helps people move better, and Occupational Therapy helps people live better,”
said Austin Gillard, CEO at CCMC. “Together, these services make a powerful team that supports
our patients’ physical and emotional well-being.”

This month—and every month—Clay County Medical Center is proud to recognize its dedicated
Occupational Therapy team for their commitment, compassion, and life-changing impact on patients
throughout the region
