Outdoor warning devices known locally as “Storm Sirens” are located in all of the incorporated cities in Clay County, Kansas, and in the Clay County Park. Clay County Storm Sirens are activated by radio signal from the Clay County Sheriff’s Department. There are no Storm Sirens located in rural areas of Clay County. Clay County residents are encouraged to own and properly maintain NOAA Weather Radios for use by their household to receive storm warnings while indoors.
Clay County Storm sirens are activated Monday mornings at 10:00 AM from March through November each year as a weekly test of the Clay County Storm Siren system. The sirens will not be activated for the weekly testing if storms are present in or near the Clay County area.
Storm Sirens in Clay County are only activated in emergency situations when tornadoes are confirmed by the National Weather Service or by trained weather spotters in Clay County. Storm Siren activation is a warning to citizens to immediately seek shelter indoors. When Clay County Storm Sirens are sounded, life threatening danger is imminent.
If a Clay County Storm Siren is sounded multiple times, life threatening danger still exists. Remain under cover.
Local radio stations will announce the “all clear” when the storm threat has passed.
Residents and visitors are encouraged to know the Storm Siren policies of the communities they visit outside of Clay County.
TAKE ACTION WHEN THE SIRENS SOUND:
- Listen to KCLY Radio, 100.9 FM, for Clay County weather updates and emergency instructions
- Move indoors. Take shelter in the lowest part of the structure. Put as many walls between you and the outdoors as possible. Stay away from windows.
Before the Storm:
- Have a family and business plan of action. Practice your plan frequently.
- Assemble an emergency supply kit and place it in your designated shelter area.
- Purchase NOAA Weather Radios for every level of your home or business.
