During the Clay County Commissioners’ weekly meeting on June 23rd, the Health Department announced that Clay County’s WIC Program funding had been cut by 8%, due to Federal funding cuts.

The Federal funding cuts have affected WIC Programs across Kansas in different ways. Dana Rickley, County Health Director, said the WIC Program currently provides services to 144 families in Clay County.

“WIC is a very important Program; it supports pregnant women, new moms, and young children. We provide them with nutrition education, breastfeeding support, and access to healthy foods.”

She said the 8% reduction will have an effect on the local community, but families will still be supported.

“What these cuts mean locally is we’re going to have to make some adjustments. We will still be providing outreach, but we’re going to have to reduce some of the in-person appointments for our dietitian, relying more on phone and digital communications.”

“Even with fewer resources, we’re doing our best to be flexible, efficient, and creative, so families who need us most continue to get the help they deserve.”

“Our main goal is to make sure families still feel supported.”

While the cuts will affect home visits and travel, Rickley did state that the food portion of the Program was not affected. She said they are working with the State to work on solutions for families.

“Earlier this week, I was at a State Meeting, and we formed a work group.”

“So, we’re working very closely with the state of Kansas through our local Health Department Associations to work on some solutions that support local families.”

Rickley said, despite the budget cuts, they are still able to add families to the Program. While some aspects of the Program may be adjusted, Clay County families will still be supported.
