Summer is officially here, and the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a heat advisory for North Central Kansas. This includes Clay, Republic, Washington, Cloud, Jewell, Mitchell, and Osborne counties.

Extreme temperatures began at noon today and will continue until 8:00 pm on Saturday, June 21st. The forecasted heat index could reach 106 degrees.

NWS is urging everyone to take precautions as the combination of hot temperatures and the high humidity could lead to heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

They recommend wearing lightweight, loose-fitting clothes. Strenuous activities should be limited to early morning or evening. Take action if you start to notice symptoms of heat stroke and heat exhaustion.

Heat exhaustion symptoms include heavy sweating, weakness, muscle cramps, dizziness, nausea and rapid pulse.

Symptoms of heat stroke include high body temperature, confusion, seizures, loss of consciousness, rapid, shallow breathing, changes in sweating, and a headache.

Do not leave pets or children in vehicles unattended during these conditions. Car interiors will reach deadly temperatures in a short amount of time.
