Final Call: Apply by Friday for a Spot in Clay Center’s Community Garden!

By: Ryan Duey

The deadline to apply for one of 12 available spots in Clay Center’s Community Garden is this Friday, February 28th at noon. 12 individuals or families will have the opportunity to grow produce of their choice in the garden.

Nikki Burwell with the Clay County Health Department created the Community Garden in partnership with the Clay Counts Coalition, Washington Headliners 4-H Club, K-State Extension office, and countless other community members and businesses that donated their time and resources.

She emphasized that anyone can apply to be a participant.

“This is, and I want to make that clear, this is for everyone. This is for single guys, this is for families, this is for veterans. This is for anyone who would love to grow something and that are willing to get their hands dirty and learn about how to grow and self-sustain their own food sources.”

Participants will not only be provided a garden box to plant their produce, but will also learn the process of gardening from weeding to canning.

“In conjunction with the Extension Office and other agencies in the area, we’re going to teach our participants how to grow food, how to weed, how to can food later on in the year, etc. So, it’s going to be a very educational, very amazing opportunity for people hear in Clay.”

To apply contact Burwell at nburwell@claycountyks.org with your name, family demographics, reason for wanting to join the project, and what produce you’d like to grow. More information on the Garden, including other ways to apply can be found on the Health Department’s Facebook page.
