Free Vision and Eye Wellness Checks for Children 3 and Under in Clay Center

By: Elexis Bates

Epic Vision Eye Centers in Clay Center is offering free vision and eye wellness checks to children 3 years old and younger, aiming to help detect early vision problems that affect learning. The baseline exam includes checking for eye alignment, overall eye health, and the child’s baseline prescription.

Dr. Karli Hubka, Optometrist at Epic Vision Eye Centers, explains the importance of early detection.

“60% of children with literacy challenges or learning disabilities have an undiagnosed vision problem according to the American Optometric Association.” Dr. Hubka said. She also highlights that school screenings miss up to 75% of vision problems. “Of the children that are found to have eye problems at school, 61% never come to an optometrist.”

The free evaluation includes interactive tools to make the process enjoyable for children.

“We have finger puppets, spin globes, optometry equipment that is pediatric-friendly, and different paddles with smiley faces for our visual acuity test to check preferential looking,” Dr. Hubka said.

This initiative helps identify potential vision impairments early, which is especially crucial as “one in 10 vision problems can affect learning in school,” Dr. Hubka said.

Vision issues are often not immediately noticeable, but early intervention is vital. “Vision is something that continues to develop after we are born, that is why the earlier we can intervene the more beneficial it is,” Dr Hubka said. “Nine months is the best time to have their first exam.”

The free exam is available for all children 3 and under, and for those with insurance, it is typically covered. Parents can prepare for their child’s appointment by selecting a time when the child is alert, avoiding nap time.

For children who require further vision therapy, Dr. Brianna Albers, a local vision therapist, is available through referral. Vision therapy, like physical therapy for the eyes, helps address issues that can be improved with specialized exercises.

Parents can schedule an appointment for their child’s free eye exam by visiting epicvisioneyecenters.com or calling the Clay Center office at 785-632-6100.

Dr. Hubka encourages parents to take advantage of this valuable service.

“This is very near and dear to my heart,” she said. “My brother was born with a lazy eye, and now he can see fine so I want everyone to have the same care.”

This program does not have an expiration date, and will remain available at Epic Vision Eye Centers in Clay Center, helping to ensure that children’s vision is on track as they begin their educational journey.
