Infant Massage Class Helps Parents Bond with Babies

By: Lexi Bates

Parents as Teachers is hosting a free massage class for infants on Thursday, January 16th at 5:30 p.m. at Common Ground in Clay Center, KS. Lora Love, an instructor from Salina, and Melissa Sanchez, coordinator for Parents as Teachers will lead the class. There are eight spots left for babies aged newborn to 6 months, and parents are asked to RSVP. A free meal will also be included for parents to take home with them after the class.

“Infant massage is a great way to bond with your baby and develop a secure attachment. It also provides some health benefits for both parents and the baby,” Sanchez said.

She provided a list of the positive effects massage can offer babies and their parents:

  • Helps baby relax
  • Can improve babies’ quality of sleep
  • Can relieve gas and stomach issues
  • Can relieve the birthmother’s postpartum depression symptoms
  • Releases soothing hormones that help the baby and parents relax

In addition, loving interaction with parents encourages emotional and cognitive growth for the baby.

Sanchez recommends parents dress the baby in clothes that are easy to take on and off because the baby will be mostly undressed for the session. She said parents should bring a blanket for the baby and dress comfortably because they will be sitting on the floor.

Sanchez encourages parents to participate, stating,

“Any level of experience is welcome; the object is to teach new skills to take home with you so you’re more comfortable practicing these skills on your own,” Sanchez said.
