The Clay Counts Coalition’s monthly meeting on April 9th included topics such as New Hope Ministries, YLink, Comedian at Rex, You Matter Tour, Community Garden, and more.
Marcia Campbell, New Hope Ministries Director, spoke to Coalition members about Clay Center’s Hope House and how New Hope Ministries helps women who are struggling to get back on their feet through resources, encouragement, and different programs. Campbell stated that 32 women have been through the program. This program is supported solely by donations.
Izzy Blackwood and Braylee Langvardt, YLink members, spoke to members on different programs and conferences. Blackwood and Lori Martin attended an agricultural conference and a BPW conference recently. Blackwood has also facilitated a youth panel at the Topeka Capital and will be going back to Washington D.C. to help facilitate a fentanyl prevention plan. She will also speak at multiple events across the nation.
Matt Weller stated that he will provide a “Dad Joke” tip of the week/wellness tip through Clay Counts and USD 379. They have applied for a grant for this. The Clay County Arts Council plans to have another Comedian perform at the Rex Theatre.
The “You Matter Tour” and “Night of Hope” events will take place on Friday, April 25th. CCCHS and CCCMS students will hear the program at 7:15 a.m., and USD 379 staff will hear the program at 4:00 p.m. The event will then open to the public at 6:00 p.m. in the CCCMS Commons Area. LIFT will be providing daycare and a meal during the evening event.
The Clay County Health Department will be hosting next month’s “Wake up Wednesday” on May 7th. Breakfast and coffee will be provided to guests.
Nikki Burwell updated the members on the progress of the Community Garden. She is currently working on a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony with Grow Clay County. Pheasants Forever has volunteered to plant native grasses and flowers behind the garden. There are still four garden boxes available for any community member to use. Contact Burwell at the Health Department if you’re interested.
YLink will host a “Friday Night Lights” event on Friday, April 25th from 8:00 to 10:00 p.m. This event is titled “Be a Chef or Barista.” The Coalition is currently looking for volunteers for the evening.
