Items Discussed during the Clay Counts Coalition’s Meeting on September 10th

Lisa Last gave a presentation on USD 379’s Teammates Mentoring Program. Teammates matches volunteer adults with students in the district, aiming to improve students’ success with the help of a mentor. USD 379 currently has 69 matches, with 21 students still waiting for a match. Funded by the Clay Counts Coalition, the program is currently the largest in Kansas. Anyone interested in the program can contact Lisa Last at the District office.

YLink’s first Fifth Quarter event will take place after the CCCHS vs. Louisburg football game on September 19th. The theme will be Luau. The Bandana Squad will host a suicide prevention training on September 29th at Common Ground.

The Strong Feelings About Being Alive Courageous Conversation event held on September 2nd had a very strong turnout, with 153 people attending.

Ashley Delehanty, a Social worker with the Veterans’ Administration, attended the meeting. She reported that over 1,000 of the 6,000 citizens in Clay County are veterans or family members. She is hoping to help the Coalition in any way she can.

The Coalition will have a table at the Clay County Museum during the Gather for Good Match Day from noon to 8:00 p.m.

Advertising is taking place for the Clay County Health Fair on October 25th. Window displays are available for businesses with pricing included. Contact Allie Fitzgeralds at the Health Department if you’d like to help spread the word.

A motion was made to donate $100 in support of the Prenatal Mental Health Training set for October 7th, passing unanimously. Registration for the training can be done on the Health Department website.

The Girls on the Run Program started their enrollment campaign. Currently, they have four girls signed up, but have space available for 15 students and 15 running buddies. This program is for 3rd to 5th-grade girls enrolled in the after-school programs.

Melanie Musselman stated that the Dispatch sponsors one USD 379 student a month, voted on by the school staff. Musselman asked the Coalition to sponsor the feature. A motion was made to sponsor the Student feature for the school year, passing unanimously.

The next Courageous Conversations event is planned for October 21st, featuring the movie Can’t Look Away. The documentary focuses on social media and its effects on young people.

A motion was made to support USD 379’s Unity Day, covering the purchases for staff shirts, passing unanimously.
