KSHS and KDOT to Survey Properties along K-15 from Clay Center to Clay/Washington County Line

Kansas Historical Society

In preparation for future construction on K-15 Highway from Clay Center north to the Clay and Washington County line, the Kansas Historical Society (KSHS), in cooperation with the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT), will conduct historical and archaeological studies between August 28, 2025, and February 28, 2026.

These studies, authorized under Statute 68-404, aim to protect historical properties and archaeological sites from potential damage. KDOT staff and contractors may enter private property within 100 feet of the road right-of-way without landowner permission, and beyond that only with consent. Work will primarily involve walking the land, photographing, and, if necessary, digging small shovel tests, which will be backfilled with sod replaced.

No materials will be removed without permission. All efforts will be taken to avoid damage. For project questions, contact KDOT; for survey questions, contact the KSHS Cultural Resources Division at KSHS.LandAccess@ks.gov.
