K-State Extension’s River Valley District is offering a four-week series for those with type 2 diabetes, prediabetes, and their support persons. This program is called Live in Control, it was developed by Texas A & M, and there are several K-State Extension Agents around the state who have been trained in its implementation. Below is a list of topics and activities participants can expect to engage with throughout the four-week program:
• Describe diabetes in basic terms.
• Explain the care supporter’s role in the program, including strategies for how the care supporter can be a role model, positive communication strategies, and how a care supporter can help a loved one cope with diabetes stress.
• Discuss the participants’ feelings about diabetes.
• Discuss the 7 diabetes self-care behaviors.
• Discuss the effect of carbohydrates on blood glucose levels.
• Identify examples of high and low-carbohydrate foods.
• Describe what glucose readings mean.
• Demonstrate how to measure a single carbohydrate serving.
• Demonstrate how to plan a meal using the healthy-plate method.
• Demonstrate how to read a food label.
• Discuss complications that result from unmanaged diabetes.
• Discuss myths and facts about diabetes medicines.
As you can see, participants can expect to cover a lot of very helpful information throughout the four-week program. This information would be helpful to both newly diagnosed individuals as well as those who might have been living with diabetes for several years or decades. It can be exhausting to manage chronic conditions and programs like these can help people get back on track.
In addition to the information presented throughout the program, there can be a huge benefit to meeting several other people who are living with the same thing you are, these programs are a great opportunity to learn from others in your community who are also managing this chronic condition.
The program will be held at the Clay County Medical Center, located at 617 Liberty St in Clay Center, KS, on four consecutive Tuesdays from 10 AM to Noon. Class dates are November 18, 25, December 2, 9.
We do ask that people register in advance as we will be providing light refreshments during each class and having an accurate class count can help to reduce waste. Please call the Clay Center Extension Office to register at 785-632-5335. Questions about the program can be directed to Kaitlin Moore, Nutrition, Food Safety & Health Agent at 785-243-8185.
