David and Kathy Bloom have opened a new event space in Clay Center. While you may not recognize the address 703 Fourth Street, most citizens of Clay Center know the name and location of the previous business. Kathy explains, “It was the Silver Dollar Bar for several years. I talked to a grandson of one of the guys that ran it back in the 60s, and that would’ve been an Oscar Cramner, and then I think Ouellette’s bought it, that was in the 70s and 80s, and I don’t know when it quit, but I just thought it would be kind of neat to keep the same name.”
The Blooms have owned the building for 19 years. Another business previously used it for storage, but it was empty for ten years. The Blooms decided they needed to do something with the space. They will host almost any small event at The Silver Dollar; Kathy added, “This week, USD 379 is having a training, Thursday evening we’re having a wedding rehearsal supper, and then the Sunday after that it’s a birthday party—basically, any event where a person needs a space. The space will hold 45 to 50 people. Future renovations, including the addition of a small outdoor area, are also planned.
