Grow Clay County has added a pie-baking contest to this year’s lineup of events. Pies will be judged on overall appearance, crust, filling, and flavor or taste. Clay Center resident Caleb Osborne is one of this year’s knowledgeable judges, “I’m a sucker for the crust. As long as it is buttery, well done on the bottom, and crispy, that’s what I’m looking for.”
Osborne is an expert judge, as his wife’s grandma and great-grandma are both expert bakers. He says other volunteer commitments got him the job as a pie judge.
“I’m on the Grow Clay County Community Outreach Board, we were looking for judges and I just volunteered. So I kind of got first pick but it worked out well for me because I like pie.” Osborne’s favorites include Blueberry and Rhubarb.
The pie-baking contest will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday on the northeast corner of the courthouse square. Winners will be announced at 2:45 p.m.
