The clarifier system at the Clay Center Wastewater Plant will undergo repairs next week. City council member Daton Hess explained that the gearbox on the clarifier system is worn but remains operational and will continue to function until the new part arrives. He emphasized that the clarifier system has not malfunctioned but requires routine maintenance.
“The gearbox drives the paddle, which is about 24 feet across and is responsible for stirring the water when needed,” Hess said. “After that, the water flows to the UV station before being released into the river, while the solids are directed to an irrigation ditch.”
Hess noted that the gearbox is made of brass, a relatively soft metal that is more prone to wear over time.
Water must be filtered before being released into the environment after community use. Hess explained the clarifier system plays a crucial role in this process by separating solids from liquids.
Once the replacement parts arrive, Hess said the team plans to handle the repairs in-house.
