USD 379 to Host CDL Proxy Testing Event in Clay Center in Hopes of Filling Bus Driver Shortage Gap

By: Ryan Duey

Clay County USD 379 is partnering with the Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) to bring CDL proxy testing to Clay Center on Thursday, November 7th. The testing, which will take place at Prairie Land Partners beginning at 8:30 a.m., is meant to help staff, aspiring students, and the public start the process of obtaining their Commercial Driver’s License.

Mike McCoy, USD 379 Transportation Director, spearheaded the Pilot Program.  McCoy said this started with the idea of helping USD 379 staff obtain their CDL to help with bus transportation needs.

McCoy said this initiative has grown from just staff to helping high school students aspiring to get their CDL.

The testing is also open to the public, but space is limited to 40 participants. There are multiple tests participants can choose from, and testing is free. Participants who pass the written test will be able to obtain a Commercial Learners Permit.

Information and registration for this Proxy Testing Event can be found by searching KSDE Transportation online and clicking Upcoming Events. Additional questions about the testing and USD 379 can be directed to McCoy at the Bus Barn.
