USD 379 Will Not See Much Change With New Non-Resident Options

By: Ryan Duey

Beginning this upcoming school year all public schools in Kansas must allow Kansas students outside of their district boundaries the opportunity to attend their schools, as space allows. This initiative, passed in 2022, aims to give families more options for their children’s education.

All public school districts, including USD 379 had to post a 2024-2025 non-resident student enrollment capacity chart for each school in the district. Brett Nelson, USD 379 Superintendent, said apart from a few isolated classes with higher student numbers, they have pretty much unlimited seats available.

Nelson said with USD 334 closing their High Schools they made up a contract with 334 to help be a good neighbor. USD 379 will take on a few students from there with families having a couple of options for enrolling with USD 379.

Nelson said those students enrolling under the contract will be funded under USD 334 through general funds to educate them. These new changes should not affect staffing or transportation needs in any way.
