Abilene Police Alert Public as Cryptocurrency Scams Hit Abilene

Since Bitcoin’s launch, nearly 9,000 cryptocurrencies have emerged, leading to scams reaching Abilene. The Abilene Police Department (APD) has investigated two cryptocurrency scams this year, each costing victims over $1,000.

Assistant Chief Jason Wilkins noted that scammers often direct victims to deposit money into cryptocurrency ATMs, making funds difficult to trace. To combat this, APD has placed warning posters near ATMs and will provide presentations at senior living facilities. The FBI is also working to prevent cryptocurrency fraud through awareness campaigns and investigations.

Their tips include avoiding unsolicited online investment offers, refraining from sharing personal financial details, and not paying additional fees to withdraw funds. The FBI’s Operation Level Up has saved over $285 million by warning potential victims. Residents suspecting a scam should contact APD or report it to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center.
