An investigation by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) is being conducted on an officer-involved shooting that took place at an apartment in Wichita Monday morning.
KBI responded after assistance was requested by the Wichita Police Department (WPD) and the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) at around 2:00 a.m. Monday morning.
Around 6:20 p.m., WPD officers responded to an apartment in Wichita following a call from 14-year-old Claude Hodges’ father expressing concerns about his welfare, according to a news release. Upon arrival, after receiving no response from knocking, officers observed a bullet hole in the exterior wall and discovered a discharged bullet near the entrance.
WPD officers obtained a key and entered the apartment to find a female, later identified as 43-year-old Kylee R. Hodges of Wichita, holding a handgun with a shotgun nearby. Officers exited the apartment and contacted negotiators.
Negotiators began speaking with Hodges around 8:20 p.m., and a tactical team was called to the apartment approximately at 9:45 p.m. Efforts to persuade Hodges to disarm and come out persisted for several hours. At one point, Hodges exited the apartment and placed her handgun on the ground outside, yet she remained in proximity to the weapon.
The release states that at approximately 1:40 a.m. Hodges advanced toward officers while pointing the gun in their direction, and two WPD SWAT officers each fired a single shot at Hodges, hitting her.
Hodges received medical aid and EMS transported her to a local hospital where she underwent surgery and is expected to survive. No officers were injured. Upon reentrance of the apartment, officers found Claude Hodges in a bedroom. He was deceased from a gunshot wound.
The KBI will conduct an investigation into the officer-involved shooting, and the WPD will continue to investigate the 14-year-old Claude Hodges homicide.
The investigation is ongoing.
