According to the Riley County Police Department (RCPD), an investigation into the June 13 aggravated arson at Walmart in Manhattan remains ongoing. An affidavit has been submitted to the Pottawatomie County District Attorney’s Office for review and possible prosecution.
RCPD is leading the investigation with assistance from the Manhattan Fire Department.
Fire crews were dispatched shortly before 5:00 p.m., finding light smoke and people evacuating. Walmart employees had begun extinguishing the fire, located in the store’s center. Firefighters completed suppression efforts and removed smoldering debris. By 7:00 p.m., the store remained closed as crews ventilated the smoke.
No injuries were reported, but there was significant smoke damage. Agencies assisting included the Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office and EMS.
