The Leavenworth Police Department asked the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) to conduct an investigation on an officer-involved shooting that happened Saturday around 9 p.m. KBI agents and the Crime Scene Response Team (CSRT) responded to investigate, according to a release.

Shortly after, law enforcement officers from the Leavenworth Police Department reached the scene. Upon their arrival, they witnessed a 44-year-old male in the front yard of the residence, with a knife. Numerous verbal commands were issued instructing him to cease and drop the knife. Despite the warnings, the man advanced toward one of the officers, who discharged multiple rounds, hitting the individual.

The man, identified as Micheal L. Mills, 44, of Indianola, Iowa, was transported by EMS to a Leavenworth hospital, where he died from his injuries. A thorough and independent investigation will be conducted by the KBI.
