Officer-Involved Shooting in Topeka Leaves Suspect in Critical Condition

By Trish Svoboda

An officer-involved shooting that took place on Saturday afternoon in Topeka is currently under investigation by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI).

The Topeka Police Department (TPD) sought the KBI’s assistance for the investigation around 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 20. In response, KBI agents along with the Crime Scene Response Team were dispatched.

Earlier in the day, at approximately 3:10 p.m., TPD received a 911 alert about a sighting of a suspect linked to an armed carjacking incident that had occurred in Topeka.

Initial reports suggest that officers from the TPD arrived at the scene and spotted the suspect, 34-year-old Terrell D. Hayes-Osby from Topeka, attempting to flee on foot. During the foot pursuit, Hayes-Osby discharged his weapon towards the officers. In response, four TPD officers retaliated by firing back. Hayes-Osby was hit during this exchange of gunfire, which took place approximately at 3:25 p.m.

Medical assistance was promptly provided. Emergency Medical Services arrived and took Hayes-Osby to a nearby hospital. Fortunately, no police officers were harmed during the incident.

At present, Hayes-Osby’s health status is critical, but he is anticipated to recover.

This investigation is ongoing.
