RCPD Distancing Self from Fake Patty’s Day

The Riley County Police Department (RCPD) is formally disengaging from Fake Patty’s Day, a long-standing unsanctioned event in Manhattan, Kansas, that attracts thousands of college students. RCPD director Brian Peete announced the department’s decision during a meeting with county commissioners, citing growing community concerns over crime, property damage, and disorderly conduct linked to the celebration. In response, RCPD is launching an online safety campaign to educate attendees rather than using aggressive enforcement messaging.

Although the Aggieville Business Association no longer officially endorses the event, many bars continue to offer drink specials and promotions, keeping the tradition alive. Fake Patty’s Day has historically resulted in numerous arrests and citations, with 2024 seeing a record 57 arrests and 260 citations, the highest numbers in recent years. Peete emphasized that while officers will still patrol the event, lawbreakers will be held accountable, though the department is not adopting a zero-tolerance stance.

Efforts to restrict Fake Patty’s Day activities to Aggieville and prevent them from spilling into nearby residential neighborhoods were dismissed by the Aggieville Business Association. Despite RCPD’s decision to distance itself, the event is expected to persist, with law enforcement ensuring public safety and addressing illegal behavior as needed.
