At least 14 road and 911 signs have been stolen in Washington County over the past couple of months, prompting concern from county officials. The Road and Bridge Department began tracking missing signs on December 22 after multiple reports, and thefts have continued into January.

Six All American Road signs were taken from 3rd through 8th Roads, with one at 6th Road replaced and stolen again shortly after. Other missing signs include 22nd Road, Cross Creek Road, Hanover Avenue, a cross-intersection sign, and several traffic control signs, including “Stop,” “Stop Ahead,” and “School Bus Stop Ahead.”

Ranai Meier, director of the county’s 911/Communications department, said the $45 signs are vital for emergency responders, especially in rural areas at night. Missing signs can delay EMS, fire, and law enforcement response and create traffic hazards.

Meier called the number of thefts unusual and urged collectors to purchase signs legally.
