The Dickinson County CEO (Creating Entrepreneurial Opportunities) program recently explored an essential, yet often overlooked, aspect of leadership and community impact—philanthropy. High school students in the program participated in a special class led by the Community Foundation of Dickinson County, where they learned about the vital role of charitable giving and the responsibility each individual has in strengthening their community.
The session emphasized that philanthropy isn’t just for the wealthy or well-established—it’s for everyone, including young leaders. Students discussed how charitable giving shapes Dickinson County, supports vital community programs, and ensures a thriving future for generations to come.
Following the class, the CEO students were given the opportunity to put their knowledge into action. With $1,000 to donate, they took time to research local nonprofits, evaluating where their contribution could make the most meaningful impact. After thoughtful consideration, the class selected 4:10 Irish Den as the recipient of their grant.
4:10 Irish Den provides a safe and supportive space for youth in Dickinson County, offering mentorship, activities, and a positive environment for students outside of school hours. The nonprofit’s mission aligns with the CEO program’s goal of fostering leadership, responsibility, and community engagement among young people.
“We want these students to recognize that giving back isn’t just a nice thing to do—it’s a fundamental part of building a successful and thriving community,” said Elizabeth Weese, Executive Director at the Community Foundation of Dickinson County. “Through this experience, they saw firsthand how philanthropy fuels local initiatives and improves lives. It’s inspiring to see them embrace that responsibility at such a young age.”
The Dickinson County CEO program equips students with real-world business and leadership skills, encouraging innovation and civic engagement. By integrating philanthropy into their learning, students gain a deeper understanding of how businesses, nonprofits, and individuals work together to create lasting change.
