Sixth-grade students at Abilene Middle School, under the guidance of teacher Jennifer Casteel, are turning spare change into meaningful service with ‘Pennies for Pineapples.’ The group began after students learned that just seven cents could buy a pineapple for a child. Inspired, they launched a mission to support Tumaini Children’s Home through fundraising and supply drives.

What started small has grown into significant outreach. Students have helped provide food, a milking cow, chickens, a barn, and medicine. They’ve also collected 60 pounds of Legos, 200 pairs of socks, 60 tubes of toothpaste, and 200 toothbrushes. This year, they are raising funds and gathering ponchos for children who bike to school.

Members say the experience has reshaped their perspectives and deepened their gratitude. Casteel says her greatest pride is watching students develop compassion, teamwork, and a lasting commitment to helping others.
