The Chapman Public Library kicked off its six-week Summer Reading Program on May 14th. From now until June 28th, community members are encouraged to explore a new author or series for a chance at various prizes.
Jennifer McCall, Library Director, said this year’s theme is “Color our World.” McCall said libraries across the nation participate in this program.
“Libraries across the United States do these summer reading challenges for six weeks. People can come into the library, sign up, and read for so many minutes.”
“There are different reading minutes for each age group. When they’re done reading, they turn in their log, and they receive a prize.”
“There are various prizes that range from things like Barbie dolls, all the way up to headphones. So, we have different prizes for all ages.”
McCall said the goal of the Summer Reading Program is to get kids engaged with reading once they are out of school. Data shows that children lose reading fluency throughout the summer when not engaged in reading.
This summer, the library is holding a special competition with other area libraries.
“We are excited to announce that we have entered into an additional competition with two other local libraries.”
“We are competing against Enterprise Public Library and Wakefield Public Library to see which library can read the most minutes in their community.”
“The library that reads the most minutes will win for their library: two 3D Pens, a trophy, and bragging rights. So, if you’re in the Chapman area, I would encourage you to come in and sign up.”
There is still time to sign up for the Summer Reading Program. Visit your local library to sign up and join in to help your library and community take home the crown and bragging rights.
