Flint Hills Discovery Center’s Exhibit “Stepping into the Prairie” open until May

FHDC Release

This one-of-a-kind exhibit will use high-definition projectors, surround sound speakers, and motion sensing devices to create a virtual Flint Hills environment that reacts to guests in the space. The exhibit will feature the sights and sounds of the tallgrass prairie, digitally recreated to produce an immersive educational experience.

Step into the Prairie as you:

  • Interact with a tallgrass prairie ecosystem that evolves through four seasons and day/night cycles
  • Run, jump, and wave your arms as plants and animals react to your gestures and movements
  • Hop across a digital field as you watch a prairie fire emerge from every footstep
  • Leap onto an animal track and watch that animal scurry out of the grass and across the prairie
  • Help a dung beetle into its burrow using your feet to guide its way
  • Design your own prairie creatures in the “Paint the Prairie” interactive

Stepping into the Prairie is funded in part by Kansas Tourism, through the Tourism Attraction Sub-grants for Kansas, and the Flint Hills Discovery Center Foundation through generous support from the following donors who made possible this exhibit and accompanying technology.
