Free Hunter’s Education Course to be Held in Abilene this Weekend

This weekend, a free two-day hunter education certification course will be available at Sterl Hall in Abilene, led by the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP). Volunteer instructor Bart Hettenbach and seven other instructors, including the Dickinson County Game Warden, will cover hunting basics like ethics, firearms, ammunition, and wildlife management using a KDWP manual and the Hunter-ed Tools computer program.

The weekend course will be held on Saturday, November 2nd, from 7:45 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Sunday, November 3rd, from noon to 5:00 p.m. Participants must be at least 11 years old by November 1st and must attend both days to earn certification.

Sunday’s session includes hands-on training at a firing range, where firearms, bows, and other equipment will be provided. Participants should bring lunch for an hour-long break each day. To sign up, contact the Abilene Parks and Recreation Department.
