The National Park Service has included the Freedom’s Frontier National Heritage Area, which covers Geary County, in its Reconstruction Era National Historic Network. This initiative focuses on the post-Civil War Reconstruction Era (1861-1900), highlighting stories of freedom, education, and self-determination as the nation sought to address the aftermath of slavery and Civil War divisions.
The inclusion allows individual historical sites in Geary County to apply for listing in the network, provided they meet specific criteria related to the Reconstruction Era. Geary County’s attractions, like the Black History Trail and the US Cavalry Museum, are now eligible to apply. Approval could bring more visitors and economic benefits to the area, boosting local businesses and adding to the county’s tax revenue.
Geary County Convention & Visitors Bureau encourages attractions to apply for state grants to enhance their sites, staff will assist in the application process to help leverage this new visibility.
