The Kansas Department of Wildlife & Parks (KDWP) Education and Outreach Division will host a free “Wild Edibles of Milford” foraging hike at Milford State Park on Saturday, September 14th. Join park staff and a special guest at the Group Shelter to learn about identifying edible species during a short hike.
Two sessions will be available at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. Each session will run for two hours, and registration is required. Amy Bousman, KDWP Education Specialist for NE Kansas, said most people new to foraging are shocked by how much is available.
Each session will consist of 20 to 30 minutes of discussion on foraging topics before going on a short hike in the park identifying and talking about the area’s edible and medicinal plants, along with harmful and toxic plants. Bousman said there is a lot to learn and know.
Bousman stressed not to trust foraging apps, as they can be very inconsistent in identification, which could be dangerous. More information and a link to register for this class are available on the Milford State Park Facebook page.
