Marysville Mayor Todd Frye is looking to incorporate the youth of the community to help design the city’s next flag. Frye said Marysville’s over-50-year-old flag could use a refresh, and decided it would be fun to involve the youth.

He said he is hoping to branch off the city’s coloring page competitions that the council hosts for the students.

“I’m hoping to kind of branch off of that, but also include junior high and high school kids in the community.”

“The students can just draft whatever they think of as a flag that would represent Marysville and what it means to them.”

“Then we’ll take those designs, and we’ll kind of review them down to a certain number of entries, and have an artist freshen them up from there.”

The top designs will then go back to the Marysville Junior and Senior High students, who will vote on the next flag design for the city.

Frye said the council and organizations try to stay invested in the youth, hoping projects like this helps them decide to stay or come back to Marysville as adults.

“We want an invested youth and involved youth in Marysville, because they’ll be the ones who not only take leadership later, but we hope at least just stick around or come back after they’ve explored the world.”

“I’d like to think we have efforts, like our youth advisory council and other projects, where we can work closely with the school and these kids so that they feel like they have that ownership.”

“We want them to feel like the community represents not only their needs and wants now, but the things they will hopefully need and want as they grow and take the place over someday.”

Frye said they hope to showcase the flag on shirts, cups, bottles, and more, proudly displaying their Marysville pride.
