Valley Heights KAYs Club and Schools that Care Holding Annual Holiday Food Drive

By: Ryan Duey

The Valley Heights KAYs Club and Schools that Care organization are currently holding their annual “All We Want for Christmas is Food!” event to help local families in need during the holiday season. Food and cash donations are being accepted until December 10th.

Jayne Whitson, Family Advocate, said the event was started by the KAYs Club and FACS class, with Schools that Care joining a few years ago.

“The program that we started at Valley Heights helps to ensure families in our communities can share a Christmas meal together, because there are a lot of families living in poverty and struggling during the Christmas season. We just wanted to help them and make a difference for the families and the students that go to Valley Heights.”

Donations can be dropped off at Valley Heights High School.  Whitson said each box they make will feed a family of four. She listed food donations they are accepting.

“We’re looking for small bags of potatoes, a couple of cans of green beans, a can of cream of mushroom soup so they can make the famous green bean casserole. Half a ham, a box of stuffing, a package of dinner rolls, and a pre-made apple pie.”

Anyone who would like to volunteer to make a pie can contact Whitson. The group is also seeking volunteers to help bake any remaining pies on December 12th and 13th at the Blue Rapids Methodist Church.
