World Traveler and Guinness Book of World Record holder Patty Upton will be a guest speaker at The Midwest Dream Car Collection in Manhattan on Saturday, October 19th at 2:00 p.m.
Upton, and her late husband Loren, set out to traverse the world on land by vehicle. Upton said Loren’s goal was to take a North/South course from North America to South America, then from South Africa up to Norway, using their 1966 Kaiser-Jeep CJ-5 rightfully called the Sand Ship Discovery. This incredible journey included a trip across the undeveloped and highly diverse Darien Gap.
It took the Upton’s over a year to cross the treacherous 125 miles of the Darien Gap. Upton said when she was back in Panama, she would ship food to a nearby village to her husband when he was stranded due to rain or mechanical issues. Five years and 56,000 miles later the Upton’s completed their world journey in 1989. She will tell the story of their adventures and the Jeep during her visit to Midwest Dream Cars.
